Grading Policy for Mr. Sholl's Band Classes
In short, students will do well as long as they do the following things:
1. Bring instrument, binder, and pencil to every music class.
2. Actively participate in every class.
3. Practice instruments for 20 minutes a day at home.
Students will be graded on the following criteria:
Accountability- Students earn an Accountability grade every day they have band. Students are expected to bring their instrument, band binder, and pencil to every band class as well as be an active participant in class.
4- Student brought their instrument, binder, and pencil to class.
3- Student didn't bring pencil, but brought all other materials to class.
2- Student didn't bring binder, but brought all other materials to class.
1/IE- Student didn't bring instrument or didn't actively participate in class. Absences will not lower overall grade, but absent students should make up the time with extra practice so they don't fall behind.
Engagement- Students are expected to show growth in their instrumental music abilities. This is accomplished by a combination of home practice and effort in class.
4- Student showed advanced technique playing their instrument in class.
3- Student showed proficient technique playing their instrument in class or has showed significant improvement due to home practice.
2- Student is approaching grade level on their instrument.
1- Student is far below grade level on their instrument.
Playing Tests- Students will be assessed on many individual playing tests on their instruments throughout the year (approximately one every month).
4- Student showed expertise in technique and concepts required for the song.
3- Student showed proficiency in technique and concepts required for the song.
2- Student is approaching proficiency in technique and concepts required for the song.
1- Student is far from showing proficiency in technique and concepts required for the song.
Concerts- Band students will participate in 2 concerts; a winter concert and a spring concert. These concerts will take place at school during their regular music class times. 6th grade band students will also be expected to participate in the VUSD All District Music Festival in May, this will be during the evening at the convention center downtown. Dates for these performances will be announced at a later time.
